Emily Dickinson

Udivo, come se non avessi orecchi
finché una Parola Vitale
percorse tutta la strada dalla Vita a me
e allora seppi che avevo udito.

Vedevo, come se i miei occhi fossero
di un altro, finché una cosa
e ora so che era Luce, perché
era adatta a loro, giunse.

Abitavo, come se io stessa fossi fuori,
solo il mio corpo dentro
finché una Forza mi scoprì
e inserì in me il nocciolo -

E lo Spirito si volse alla polvere
"Vecchia amica, tu mi conosci",
e il tempo uscì ad annunciare la Notizia
e incontrò l'Eternità.
I heard, as if I had no Ear
Until a Vital Word
Came all the way from Life to me
And then I knew I heard -

I saw, as if my Eye were on
Another, till a Thing
And now I know 'twas Light, because
It fitted them, came in.

I dwelt, as if Myself were out,
My Body but within
Until a Might detected me
And set my kernel in -

And Spirit turned unto the Dust
"Old Friend, thou knowest me",
And Time went out to tell the News
And met Eternity
